2021 Legislative Session Set to Begin
At 10:00 a.m. (CT) on January 6th, the Nebraska Legislature will convene the 2021 Legislative Session, a 90-day ("long") session. Newly elected members will be officially sworn into office and temporary rules will be adopted in order to transact the business of the day.
One of the first major items of business will be the election of Speaker of the Legislature and, at this time, the only member of the body who has submitted his intent to run is Senator Mike Hilgers of Lincoln.
The important task of electing leadership of the 14 standing committees, including Education Committee, will take place. The committee chair elections are taken up in alphabetical order and the Education Committee is fifth on the list. Senators Lynne Walz and Mike Groene have declared their candidacy for election.
All committee chair elections are conducted by secret ballot and a simple majority (25 affirmative votes) is required for election.
